School Service Day Marks Feast of St. Martin de Porres
On November 4th, students and staff celebrated the feast day of our patron. In honor of the acts of kindness and service that St. Martin de Porres offered to others, students went to various locations in New Haven and Hamden to lend assistance to those in need. Sites included Amistad Catholic Worker, Christian Community Action, Clelian Adult Day Center, Community Soup Kitchen, New Haven Home Recovery, St. Ann Soup Kitchen, Tower One Tower East. At the Academy, students made friendship bracelets and kits for patients at Yale-New Haven Children's Hospital and prepared our Community Garden for winter; the garden helps provide food for the Downtown Soup Kitchen.

First Day of School Photos
This September, St. Martin de Porres Academy once again opened its doors for the first day of school. The Academy, now entering its ninth school year, radiated a vibrancy and excitement that speaks to a wonderful year to come full of academic, social, and spiritual growth for all. Our students are truly striving to become their best selves and reach their full potential, and SMPA is committed to supporting them through middle school, high school, and beyond! We would encourage all interested to come and share in this life-saving mission to break the cycle of poverty through education. Contact email@example.com to schedule a visit soon!

Where teaching is a vocation and an investment
NEW HAVEN – Wait, wait. You live in a convent? That's right. When the day is done, 14 young teachers and staff members from St. Martin de Porres Academy (SMPA) all go "home" to the former convent at St. Brendan Parish, where they live.
It's part of an effort to attract idealistic, young college graduates to an inner-city school, in return for a modest paycheck, experience, teaching certificate and even a free master's degree. Click Here to read full article.

Golf fore Kids a Scorching Success!
Our entire SMPA Family would like to extend our thanks to all those who participated in and supported our 8th Annual "Golf fore Kids" held Monday, June 24th at The Farms Country Club in Wallingford. While the day's heat was indeed oppressive, the mood of the day most certainly was not. Our nearly 100 participants enjoyed a delightful round of golf, a wonderful dinner from The Farms, and some compelling stories of success from three of our SMPA graduates.
Mishell Manrique, rising junior at Lauralton Hall; Alexandria Doyles, Mercy H.S. graduate who will attend St. Michael's College; and Kahdeem Cohens, Hopkins School graduate who will attend Princeton, all spoke eloquently. They wowed the attendees with their drive, resilience, and dedication to earn a quality education and equip themselves with the tools needed for future success. All three are living testaments to the power that a loving and supportive environment can have in a young person's life—the very same environment that St. Martin's provides to all students who walk through our doors.
This year's event was certainly the most successful to date. SMPA graciously thanks all of our donors, volunteers, and staff who made this wonderful day possible, especially Webster Bank, who for the eighth year was our prime sponsor. We are grateful for our hard-working Golf fore Kids Committee: Nancy Harold, Kathy Smith, Mike McHugh, Brian Skinner, Tim Donahue, Gene Harris, Julie Friese, Gail Cerrone, Bart Lombardi, and Kim Malcolm. Through the generosity of Mary Surowiecki and her sons Jim, Tim and David, we were also able to present two scholarships to SMPA graduates, Ebony Griffith (Sacred Heart Academy) and CJ Perez (Notre Dame H.S.) in memory of Ben Surowiecki , a lover of the game of golf, and an irreplaceable part of our SMPA Family who passed away last December. These presentations through the The Benjamin Surowiecki First Tee Scholarship Fund will now be an annual part of our Golf fore Kids event. Thank you all for your continued support of our mission, and we hope to see many of you out on the course next year!

Candy Meets Aristotle At St. Martin De Porres
On Monday afternoon last week, beneath the bright sun at the park at Monk Corner (Cedar and Amistad streets), teacher Jesse Walsh arrayed seven kids who had signed up for the club around a picnic table. There they commenced one of their favorite philosophy exercises that Walsh has invented. She calls it the candy game.
A former math and science teacher at the school, philosophy-lover and now graduate student, Walsh (pictured) now travels in from Boston every Monday to conduct the class. Walsh began the club two years ago as St. Martin De Porres Academy (SMPA) teachers are encouraged to create curriculum that derives from their own passions for the 3 to 5 p.m. time slot.
